Am I a Phone ADDICT.......


   

 


 latest research showed that, more people have smartphones than toilets on Global scale. Also, 71% of people sleep with their cellphones by their sides. It can easily be seen in our surroundings that how phones are becoming crucial part of our life.

            Irrespective of all the advantages, phones are now hampering our professional lives and running our personal relations. It was made for empowering us but now are dominating both our physical and mental lifestyle.  

             Phone addiction is now becoming a global problem. Irrespective of culture, creed and tribe, everyone is somehow surrounded by them and he finds no way of coming out. Phone addiction apparently seems to be a lighter problem but in fact, it is as severe as any other addiction like drugs, gambling etc which results in the disruption of both your inner and outer life and even can cause death. But before starting this topic, we should first know what actually phone addiction is and how it came into being.

                  So, phone addiction can be defines as “a psychological or behavioral dependence on cell phone”.

               In other words, when the behavior of a person started to depend on the use of cellphone, then it is called as phone addiction. Suppose, a person became aggressive when he couldn’t find his phone or is not able to reach his phone for almost half an hour.

              In late 20th century, mobile phones were not so advanced so there were little chances of its addiction. These mobiles were only capable of sending and receiving calls and messages. But, later on, games were introduced and that is where phone addiction starts. And, now mobile phones are converted into smart computers. A person having smart phone is same as he gets access of infinite streams of information. Not only this, they are serving as small electrical houses of entertainment. They are built in such an attractive way that while using person becomes free from his time and space.

      Following are some proven facts of phone addiction.

    35% of people first thing of their phones while waking up.

    44% of 18-24 years old fall asleep while phones in their hands.

    40%   never disconnect themselves from phone even on vacations.

     44% Americans say that they cannot go to their duty without phones with them.

An average person touches 1 Million times his phone per year.

·          Symptoms

                     Like every other problem, this type of addiction has fatal effects on a person. So, the very question arises is how can a person be sure that he/she has mobile addiction. So, some of the major symptoms are as follows:

1.    Display clearance symptom:

                 In this symptom, person becomes aggressive and confused if he couldn’t reach his phone or if phones battery dies. During this symptom, person is likely to meet a fight or loses his temper.    Children also show these symptoms.

2.    Deceive:

      Some phone addicts complain of hearing fake tones or wrong frequencies of vibration. It is because by hearing tones again and again, their mind becomes used to it and it starts to perceive every sound as tones or every shock as vibration. This results in confusion and distraction.    

 

3.    Connect online:

       Frequent use of phone results in the lack of physical connection. Families stop talking to each other. People know about the situation of another country without knowing about their own surroundings. This affects person’s relation with others.

 

4.    Checking mobile often:

               Within every ten minutes, person tries to check his phone even if he doesn’t   needs it. This can cause serious problems in ones life by having accident, physical damage, stopping productivity at work etc.

 

5.    Loss of time:

        As, it has been discussed before, that people generally stop carrying about time when they get busy in mobiles. Many people mostly young use mobiles for killing tine or for entertainment. This greatly reduces their productivity and affecting their score.    

 

6.    Aggressive behavior:

            Abnormal use of mobile phones causes aggression as well as increases anger. It trigger person’s impulsive behavior. He starts to feel more and take other’s action on his heart, even if it is a joke.

 

 

7.    Health problems:

              Mobile addiction is sometimes the major cause of health problems. It affects inner as well as the outer body. Some of the major problems are as follows:

 

7.1. Eyesight:

              Almost half of the frequent mobile users have short sightedness. Also, if not treated, this may permanently damage one’s eye or the nerve cells resulting in blindness. Also, due to sensitive, children eyes are most effected by screen rays.

7.2. Sleep disorder:

                 After perceiving screen rays, human mind releases dopamine which affects sleeping. If the situation continues then it may result in severe sleeping disorders. Sleeping disorder then reduces productivity, dizziness, blood pressure, anger etc.

     This disease is becoming common in teenagers now a days as well as children using mobiles.

 

7.3. Depression:

   Depression is a common disease if 21st century but people generally start complaining and eat pills after frequent mobile use. Person also becomes depressed after watching people enjoying their lives which they can’t or don’t want to. Or, watch several sad movies, dramas as well as listening to emotional music for several days.

 

   7.4 Brain Cancer:

              Mobile signals or the radio waves can cause tumors in brain if exposed frequently. These tumors can various diseases like brain cancer, memory loss, can make you paralyze etc. Unfortunately, it can also result in  those diseases which  has no treatment up  to now.

 

7.5 Tinnitus :

              It is one of the severe problems of mobile addiction in which person hears a continuous ringing in his\her ear. It occurs when he talks with someone for long hours or listen music in a loud volume. Which causes damage in ear drum.

 

7.6. Nomophobia:

           Most people think that nomophobia is one of the types of mobile addiction which is totally wrong.

                Actually, it is the fear of not having, mobile phone. Person having this phobia remain confused when he don’t have mobile. This phobia can result in severe problems if not treated.

 

7.8. Dependence:

              People nowadays are becoming fully dependent on their mobiles, like reading, studying, playing, entertainment, social media etc. even, now for small calculations, they use mobiles. Hence, in this way, mobiles are taking which is reducing his confidence and damaging his self-esteem.

 

7.9. Skin Problems:

           Heat of mobile or radio waves may cause skin problems mostly in women and sometimes cause skin burn.

 

 Conclusion :

      

In short for most people, getting control over their smartphone and Internet use isn’t a case of quitting cold turkey. Think of it more like going on a diet. Just as you still need to eat, you probably still need to use your phone for work, school, or to stay in touch with friends. Your goal should be to cut back to more healthy levels of use.
